Computer security defence has moved on. Once the sole domain of the desktop anti-virus software package, it has grown over the years into a sophisticated family of products to combat the increasing ingenuity of hackers and their malicious code.

Whilst anti-virus defence is still very relevant – try doing without your PC for three days! – the mechanisms used to protect corporate infrastructures have now reached a level where the overheads of managing these systems represent a considerable cost.
