Although servers can face different types of threats, similar techniques are used to protect them in the McAfee Entercept Host intrusion prevention product. For example, buffer overflow exploits are one of the most common enterprise security threats today with over 60% of advisories issued relating to this type of attack.

In addition, hackers are using more sophisticated buffer overflow techniques to gain administrative access to machines and steal confidential information, alter system configurations, execute commands and/or install ‘backdoors’.
