No pain, no gain in consultancy upturn

These are hardly the heady days of the dotcom boom, but signs of recovery are emerging in the IT market – bringing with them well-worn problems such as IT and consultancy skills shortages and relentless new demands from the business.

According to an annual survey by research consultancy Gartner, corporate IT budgets are expected to see their biggest increase this year since 2001. The survey, among 1,300 chief information officers worldwide, reports an average budget increase of 2.5% this year, up from 1.4% in 2004, flat budgets in 2003 and a 1.3% increase in 2001.
