From strategy to reality

Management consultants have a key role to play in steering client strategies and making them work.

Management consultants have a dynamic relationship with a client’s Board. They are often brought in for their experience and methodologies at times of change and crisis. Many are hired to evaluate new market directions, define five-year plans and advise on a merger/acquisition strategy.

But this strategic relationship can cause two kinds of frustration to consultants. Firstly, such assignments generate good ad hoc revenues but rarely ongoing consulting fees. Secondly, it can be demotivating when a consultant helps point a company in the right direction only to see little material progress next time they are engaged – perhaps years later.
