Companies are facing an avalanche of corporate rules and regulations, including the Data Protection Act, Sarbanes- Oxley, Basel II, the Freedom of Information Act and BS 7799 (ISO 17799), a piece of legislation covering security issues which contains a number of control requirements.

And ensuring compliance is not cheap – industry analyst META Group estimates that a large bank could spend up to £100 million over the next three years on IT-related compliance programmes.
