It may not be the Next Big Thing, but ‘convergence’ – the coming together of technology, media and telecoms to provide new services to consumers – will certainly be big for consultants.

Convergence made a false start in the dotcom boom, but it is back on the agenda and stirring up a storm of mergers and acquisitions as potential suppliers of converged services realise the need for content providers, telcos and media companies to buy the channels that will give them the quadruple play of fixed-line telephony, mobile services, broadband and television; and platform providers annex companies offering relevant products and services such as sophisticated storage products and management tools for the provision of internet protocol content.
